# My spider plant has been getting lots of little flies- at first…

_Posted by Tara on 2023-12-15_

My spider plant has been getting lots of little flies- at first thought they are fruit flies but I don’t think they are. In summer I left it out side to clean up and brought it back in. And now it happens again. Any thoughts how to get rid of the flies? How to help the plant?

Thank you in advance!

They are very much like fruit flies, but they are faster! They’re fungus gnats.

Systemic Granules on top of the soil with water will kill their larvae. Also, search all the posts for ‘fungus gnats’ and you’ll find plenty of solutions.

Mosquito Bits have worked wonders for me. Treated my plants once and haven’t had a problem for several years. I have to mention that I keep a small amount in my watering can as well.

Yep my plants had loads of them as well… I repotted the ones that the gnats and then tried to let the soil dry out a lil more.
Good luck

I think those are fungus gnats. I don’t know how to help but they are definitely fungus gnats.

Let the plant dry out a bit. Make sure the soil isn’t moist. Soak mosquito bits in a pitcher of water for about 15 minutes and then water generously. I do that and then a spray of neem oil when the gnats got out of hand and then I just use little sticky traps in my plants to catch the few left.

if your spider plant has fungus gnats, it’s likely being overwatered. fungus gnats will only lay eggs in damp soil. i let my spider plants’ soil dry completely before watering again, except for overcrowded ones which get water when maybe 75% of the soil is dry
