# Anyone else think it’s weird when someone references their plants or…

Anyone else think it’s weird when someone references their plants or your plants as “she”? I guess people just like to believe whatever they want but there’s this thing called science…

Almost every popular house plant is monoecious, meaning they have both male and female parts. All your monsteras, anthuriums, alocasia, pothos, aglaonema, syngoniums, dracaena, cacti, most succulents, even most flowers are all hermaphrodites.

If you’re calling a plant a “she” you are incorrect almost 100% of the time.

🤷🏼‍♂️

So plants are either non-binary or Omnigender? Even plants are part of LGBTQ+ :D

The term is actually monoecious which specifically means, (of a plant or invertebrate animal) having both the male and female reproductive organs in the same individual; hermaphrodite. So nothing without a spine is classified the same.

If you wanted to insult one of your lgbqt+ friends with that word though you would be correctly gendering them while also calling them spineless 🤣

It’s just a bit of fun, not that deep really lol. I call my plants “she” all the time because I think it’s cute and I see them as my little plant babies. Doesn’t mean I’m unaware of the concept of science though, I don’t actually think they are scientifically female.. no need to patronise people for having fun with their plants by saying they don’t understand science

Anytime I send a pic of a blooming cactus to a friend, she asks, “What’s that gal’s name?”

I use human gender terms for my plants the same way some name their plants. There’s no other significance to it for me and I don’t think that doing so suggests that I don’t understand or that I disagree with science. It’s just a name.

It doesn’t bother me in a sciencey way, but yes reading a plant is a “she” makes me cringe a little 😂😂😂 It weird me out, like IT’S a plant
