Is there any reason why my spider plant isn’t giving babies? It’s about a year old. There is no drainage in her pot but there are small rocks at the bottom, keeping her alive.

I’ve read it takes quite a while for a spider plant to make babies!

Spider babies come from the flowers. Boost the health of the plant to get it in shape. It will bloom when it’s healthy and growing. Even spider babies can produce tiny spider babies like my little Bonnie Curly spider plant show in the picture. It produced 2 offsprings this summer while in a 3 inch pot. They have developed their tiny root buds. So, technically, the little ones can be planted.

Plant the plant in bright indirect light, fertilize and water when at least one or two inches of soil is dry. The marking will be bright and clear on the leaves when the plant is happy.

I recommend you change the pot to one that is wide at the top without a narrow neck. Spider plants have thick finger like roots that get pot bound. They like soil that drains well and quickly dries out. The small surface area slows drainage. The narrow neck makes it difficult to repot. Good luck🍀

definitely agree it needs to be repotted, no drainage will kill most spider plants eventually in my experience. i also recommend looking into perched water tables in potted plants, it will explain why rocks actually have the opposite effect of drainage on the pot.

I haven’t fact-checked this, but I was told recently that spider plants put out babies when they’re looking for water.

Also that they prefer distilled water.

Spider plants initially put out flowers to spread. The babies come after flowering. They can pull water from the soil once rooted. But, the appendage eventually dries up once the baby plant roots. It’s more like a ground cover spreading out on top of the soil.

Spider plants do well in any water type including the hard water at my home. They are not finicky plants.

Oh and yes, please repot in a pot with drainage holes.

I just repotted her into a bigger pot with drainage holes.
