Found some Moss outside my job today and I was wondering if I could take it from here and make like a terrarium??? Would that work? Would it die if I moved it from here? What kind of Moss is this?? I'm new to Moss but I'm very interested in it!

You can take moss from the wild, but it could have bugs or diseases. When I made my mossariums, I ordered the moss on Etsy. Moss doesn’t really need any soil, but it needs drainage and a surface to sit on. You can make an airtight mossarium so it becomes its own little ecosystem, or you can make one you open every now and then. There are plenty of step-by-step guides online. Good luck! 💚

I believe this is pillow moss. I agree with Penny, moss is home to a LOT of bugs. I think New England Herpetoculture sells pillow moss if you’re in the US. Josh’s Fogs too maybe

I’ve made tons of terrariums and always source my moss from outside. All you have to do is wash it and quarantine it. It doesn’t eliminate the risk of outdoor pests, but it does invite more diversity into your terrariums!

Just soak the moss in some water and any bugs in it will float to surface. Then you can use. Buying moss on etsy is them doing just that! Finding it out in wild then cleaning it up and shipping. You might as well do it yourself.

You can grow moss from the wild! That's a really pretty patch, too! One thing to be aware of, although I'm by no means an expert on moss- it can actually take moss a long time to grow in the wild, some varieties it takes like 10-20 years which is crazy! Depending on where you live, some kinds of moss are actually pretty rare and easily threatened by overcollecting- so you might want to harvest judiciously! 🌿✨💖
