# Several weeks ago I purchased a Swiss cheese plant on the internet…

_Posted by Robert on 2023-09-08_

Several weeks ago I purchased a Swiss cheese plant on the internet and when it arrived two of the leaves were damaged so I cut them off. A few days ago I noticed a leaf growing from the middle of the stem I had cut. Is this normal? Also every morning drops a what seems to be water. Is that normal?

Both normal ☺️ That will be the new growth point for the next stem. The water is basically perspiration. There’s a plant-specific word for it that I forget at the moment

if something happened to the node on the leaf stem you cut off, the plant will start growing new leaves from the most random spots. it’s happened to my trailing plants many times if the stems get broken off by accident, not a problem as long as it continues to put out new growth. the water on the leaf is the plant releasing water it already had inside itself, because it’s trying to absorb more water from the soil. my monstera also has water spots on the leaves if i water too soon before it needs it, just try and monitor soil conditions so root rot isn’t accidentally introduced, and the water spots should stop appearing

The dripping is called transpiration and is a process similar to our perspiration. Totally normal.

As for the leaf: monsteras have 1 growth point per stem (generally) and each leaf grows from within the petiole of the previous leaf.

In this case, the leaf you cut off had the active growth point with a new leaf developing inside of it. You basically cut the plant right where it was trying to grow its next leaf.

In general is best to make sure the leaf you are pruning has already split open and produced the next leaf before cutting it off. Does that make sense?
