# Hi all! I am looking for some advice and any would be sooooo…

Hi all! I am looking for some advice and any would be sooooo appreciated 🙏🏼 basically I am needing to repot 2 of my plants (ZZ and Pothos) and looking to go from 12cm (plastic) pot to a terracotta with drainage hole. I was thinking 15cm (inner diameter) is that about right for an upgrade or too much/not enough, seems to be hard to find help online - I have no experience repotting 🥹

Not good with cm, but the Z Z plant loves to be squished. I’d definitely put it in terracotta but I wouldn’t go much bigger if at all. Not sure on the pothos.

Thank you! From 12cm to 15 isn’t much of an increase so sounds like it should be okay

Yeah, I was told leave the ZZ alone for as long as possible. If it’s in the plastic nursery pot, literally wait until it’s breaking it and then only repot every 4 years after(ish). But definitely drainage hole terracotta, ZZs are loooooow water or death lol.

You can literally do whatever you want to to the pothos! They tolerate anything

Perfect thank you 😍 the ZZ is in its nursery pot and let’s just say it’s barely holding it in 😂

Sorry, one last question—so the ZZ roots have like little potato-like rhizomes (tubers) in their roots, are any of them visible above soil? If they are, then you have permission to repot lol. And heck, maybe it actually is time to repot! You’ll know when you stop getting new growth.

Okay fab, I will inspect when I get home and go from there. Thank you so much for all the info 😁

Yes if both are busting out, then certainly repot. And a 3cm difference is fine. You generally don’t want to go bigger than 3-5cm than the root ball.

Brilliant, thank you! Excited to repot but also a bit nervous

I have successfully split the two ZZ plants I had and moved most to larger pots depending on how many tubers I found when I cleaned off the dirt.

The bigger the tuber(s) the bigger the pots. I arranged based on how I’d like them to look as they grow. Some have 1 most have 2 or 3. You can see the smallest in the bottom left. No issues whatsoever. I think you’ll be fine. I layered a combo of cactus soil, my favorite compost and some regular potting soil depending on the size of the pots.

That’s been super helpful, thank you so much! Yours look great by the way 😍 I love my ZZ plant so just want to make sure it’s going to be okay

They are truly resilient and have grown well for me. Good luck. 🍀
