Help! I just got this Monstera and she’s growing sideways. Should I just cut off from the top two nodes and propagate then replant the mother with a rod so she starts growing upward?

I’m still kinda a beginner, I just got my first monstera \& did so much research Google, TikTok, \& Pinterest. You’re monstera is BEAUTIFUL! I heard moss poles does wonders, maybe just repotting her for a better position \& adding a moss poll so the aerial roots will start warping around. Unless you want to make plants babies

Thank you!! I’m not set on making plant babies but I’ve heard it also makes for fuller foliage. I’m going to get a moss pole today!

I’m not 100% on monstera, but I had a silver inch plant that I chopped up and put the stems in the same pot. Within a month the plant has quadrupled in size. I’m still a beginner, but I’m starting to learn that pruning/propagating is great for bushier plants

You just hacked off a piece and put it in the same pot as the mother? Did you let it callous at all or you just put it in straight away? Thanks for sharing your experience! I’m new with plants also.

Well, I was gifted a long piece by someone buying a shelf from me. Everything online said to chop it up soo I did. And yeah, there was no mother plant soo they got a new pot. And no, I did not wait for them to callous.

I’m actually thinking of hacking up my arrowhead plant to see if I can make him look less stringy!😂

I would recommend a diy moss pole filled with sphagnum moss or a tropical soil mix that your Monstera can climb on. Check out YouTube for cool tutorials on moss poles. ☺️

Thank you! I’m going to the Nursery today to get tropical soil mix and some better sphagnum moss😄

Monsteras are vines where they grow natively :) That’s what’s happening here. She’s just growing like a vine. Moss poles are amazing for them to climb on and stick to. If you ever get a root growing out of it, it’s called an Ariel root, to help them climb :) So, she’s not growing sideways, she’s just growing! Good luck 🥰

It is just looking for support :). In nature, monsteras crawl along the ground until they find a tree or solid surface to climb. They actually grow toward the darkest object they “see” and then start growing up toward the light!

I can highly recommend thiccly moss poles. They are fantastic.

Make sure to get the real thing though. There are lots of imposters on Amazon.
