# Seeking advise on caring for my bonsai tree. Is it normal for bonsai…

Seeking advise on caring for my bonsai tree. Is it normal for bonsai trees to lose all their leaves during the winter? I went on vacation recently and came home to all my bonsai leaves gone ☹️ I have it in a window, so it’s receiving plenty of light and I water it about once per week.

Is your bonsai deciduous or evergreen? Most deciduous trees lose their leaves when the seasons change and light cycles get shorter. Whereas evergreens like pine/juniper/cedars will retain their green year round.

What is odd is the timing of leaf drop. Are you northern or southern hemisphere?

I think it’s deciduous. I’m in the northern hemisphere, Washington state

WA is home for me as well. All my deciduous bonsai lost their leaves into fall, though I keep mine outside unless temps go too low…they should spring back and start budding up again soon.

that’s what I’m hoping happens!

Mine died right after it dropped its leaves. Or.. maybe as? I’ll be honest, I never figured it out.

What kind of trees are they? What season is it in your location? Are they indoors or outdoors? What kind of potting mix do you use? If they’re indoors and someone else was watering them for a while when you were away, they might have had too much or too little water. I’d recommend using a water meter to check the moisture level of the soil and act accordingly. If they’re outdoors, has there been a drought or a storm?

I believe it’s deciduous, but I’m not 100% on the exact type. I’m in Washington State, so we’re still experiencing some winter weather, headed into spring. It’s inside and I bought it from a plant store, so it has the potting soil that it came with. It probably has to do with watering, I’m just wondering if the leaves might grow back!
