# To repot or not to repot, that is the question. Hello. I bought this…

To repot or not to repot, that is the question.

Hello. I bought this little guy at H.D. In the beginning of August (1/2 price of course.)

Some info about 1., 2, 3., and 4.:

1\. Is the plant, not root bound, not in any pot.
2\. Is the plastic nursery pot the plant grew in.
3\. Is a glazed terracotta pot with no drainage holes that 2. was inside when purchased.
4\. Is a one inch wider \& one inch shorter self watering pot (in a pot) compared to item 2 size. It has no holes on the outer pot but I could see when I’d need to pour excess water out to make sure it’s not sitting in water.

Should I:

A. Leave him be as 1. inside of 2., and 2. inside of 3.
B. Drill some holes in the bottom of 3. and put 1. In 3.
C. Repot 1. into 4.

I left mine and he has done well! Two new leaves and roots barely starting to grow out of the bottom and I’ve had him about a month or so. I’ll repot in the spring or early summer probably

LOL. Thank you for your reply.

I needed to know A, B, or C though. 😁

A. Leave as is which is plant Inside of 1. \& 1. inside of 3.

B. Drill some holes in 3. And put the plant into the pot without its current nursery plastic 1. pot..

C. Put the plant in 4. Without its current nursery plastic 1. pot.

I personally don’t care for self-watering pots, and wouldn’t use one on a ficus elastica. All of mine are in plastic pots with drainage holes. I’d definitely drill a hole into the terra cotta one if you’d like to use it for another plant, or eventually repot it into it, but for the time being, I would say keep it in the plastic nursery pot until it outgrows it, and use the terra cotta one as a cover or simply keep the plastic one as the sole pot for it. Hope this helps!

Hi,

Thats’s what my common sense is telling me too.

It just doesn’t feel right looking at that nursery soil. Makes me think this is why the plants at the big box stores get on the death carts. That the nursery container and soil wasn’t meant to sustain the plant for long periods of time.

And while they say rubber plants are easy to care for, I think they are not easy. They need light and that is going to be in short supply very soon.
