# I have several types of Tradescantias and they do great in the summer…

_Gepostet von Stephanie am 2025-02-07_

I have several types of Tradescantias and they do great in the summer when they are outside and slowly over the winter inside they start dying. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong. I water when they are dry and they have a grow light for 12 hours. Please help and thanks

For these, during winter I water when the soil is almost completely dry, and use a grow light about 6-12” away. Only thing I can think of that could be variable is indoor temp? A lot of times there will be some winter die-back with these, really depends on your indoor temps. Shouldn’t fall below 55°. It could be shock from changing environments too. There’s a lot of variables.

I bring them in when it's around 65° during the day cause I keep my house 68.° maybe the grow light needs to be closer. I usually end up chopping them and propagated what is left but I would really love to keep them going all year round. Thanks for your help.

They are known for getting sad looking on top, so that’s usually the cycle, to cut and prop to refill the pot. I usually curl a tendril up back into the soil and pin it there, it’ll root and fill the top up over time.

Did you replace the soil? The current soil looks a lot darker, muddy and unhealthy. The plant looks like it’s rotting. I recommend checking for root rot and replacing the soil.

Low light can give the same effect as noted in the previous comment. Place the light within a foot of the plant. 🍀🪴

No it was just waterd. I let them dry out before I water them and this plant is only a year old so I haven't repotted it yet but I will check the roots too. Thanks

Mine always look crappy over the winter. I just restart all my tradscantias in the spring. I try to keep them as long as possible but they always crap out in spring, and that’s even in the sunroom. They look just ok when in my greenhouse but only for 1 winter. Eventually they all need a reset
