# Hey y'all! My alocascia has dropped two leaves since I last watered…

_Lagt ut av Paula den 2025-11-16_

Hey y'all! My alocascia has dropped two leaves since I last watered it a week ago :( the stem seems so have gotten mushy and just completely given way for some reason. Any suggestions on how to protect the last three remaining leaves?

It sounds like root rot…. I’d check the roots and repot with dry soil. Take some clean scissors and cut off the dead roots and then repot into a much chunkier mix. Alocasias hate being wet but love being moist!

Good to know! She got repotted recently so I'll be surprised if it's rot already but will check! Thank you :)

Oh that might change it… alocasia really dislike their roots being touched so she could just be in repot shock…? Sorry lovey, I only have had my alocasia Polly for like 5 months and I haven’t had this problem I just want to help!

Leaf drop in Alocasia can be a normal part of the plant's life cycle as it adjusts to a new environment or lacks sufficient energy to support many leaves.

If the stem is mushy that usually means root rot - gently take her out of the pot and check her roots

If you don’t have root rot for sure, I have learned that alocascias only keep a couple leaves at a time until the plant is mature.

If the stem is also mushy, you could have stem rot and root rot. My suggestion is take the whole plant out of the potting mix and rinse off the entire root system. Yes, the plant will get shocked, but to save the plant is I personally rather give up on saving the roots and just let the whole plant re-root. When ringing off the roots, wash off anything that's brown mushy and smells bad. Leave only clean healthy looking tissues. Don't be afraid to be left with barely any roots, alocasia can regrow roots in water especially if you only need to support one leaf. I've used this method to save over 5 alocasias. And they all worked. The only one that was too far gone was Longiloba, it was rotted to the core.
