# how to save my olive trees? i had them outside for. the longest time…

how to save my olive trees? i had them outside for. the longest time and they were doing really well (ideal conditions for them where i live; half-full sun, 60-80° day fluctuations) now the leaves are all crispy and i’m not sure what happened. i kept watering them and it’s been raining a few times a week lately! did the sun become too much and burn their leaves, or was the cold too cold? we had a few days recently that got as low as 50 night temp, i thought it was fine because they’re very cold hardy. any advice appreciated!!

One important thing to remember about olive trees is that they’re accustomed to Mediterranean conditions, both in climate and growing medium. They really like to overwinter, so as it cools off, they start to hibernate like other many other trees. However, I’ve also discovered that they like to dry out, so it’s usually better to pot them in free draining soil. If they get too much water and can’t dry out, they may freak out a little. I wouldn’t worry too much at this point if you’ve had them a long while. They should be able to bounce back if this is due to the rain as long as you let them dry out a little. If this is seasonal though, there’s absolutely nothing to worry about and they’ll start growing again next year. You still might let them dry out a bit and not let them get too far below freezing through the winter.

okay, thank you so much for your help. i’ve only had them for a few months so i wasn’t anticipating their seasonal changes, but i’ll definitely keep them around. i tried to have them in well draining pots, with a secondary pot filled with rocks to act as an outdoor weight and a drainage layer for them to suck up extra if they need it. what are your tips on telling between seasonal changes and over/under watering?

I think it’ll be difficult to tell at this point, but you might start with letting them dry out a bit between waterings. If they start to put out new leaves in the next month or so, you know it’s the watering. If not, it’s seasonal. I’ve noticed my olive tree is kind of a slow grower, so it can be difficult to tell issues apart. But I think patience is a virtue here.
