# Hi! I am looking to grow my collection by quite a lot in the future…

_Opslået af Plantlife den 2026-01-02_

Hi! I am looking to grow my collection by quite a lot in the future but I am a little worried about upkeep so anyone who thinks they can help even a little I would love to hear from you!

A few of my specific questions:
. If you have a large collection, how do you keep them clean/ dust free
. Any tips or tricks/ things you wish you knew sooner that help your plants thrive
. People with super large collections (like 100+) what does your daily/ weekly routine look like, how do you keep it organized and manageable
. What are your favorite products (grow lights, fertilizer, etc)

I would also love just any helpful words of encouragement or advice!
Thank you in advance!

I have a lot of plants, when I water them I put them all in my bath tub and water them for a few minutes, its quicker and washes out the bad stuff that a regular watering doesn't get (only so it if ur plant has a drainage hole on the bottom)

#### Plantlife svarede den 2026-01-02

Do you have more tropical than succulents? I think watering in the tub would be nice I would just be afraid of overwatering or leaves breaking. Does the happen to you often?

#### Buffy svarede den 2026-01-03

Overwatering means that plants are watered too often. Soaking most plants when they need water is good for them as long as the water can drain out thoroughly so there is no standing water, before you put them back where they go. This is what I have learned from plant experts.🪴

I’ve learned to water my plants throughly. I found that using clear pots with great drainage is very beneficial! Also it’s a growing process it’s ok if some plants don’t make it but learn from the experience. Research your plants learn about where they come from, humidity and sunlight varies for each plant. I like to group my plants by sun exposure and humidity needs. I hope these tips help. Happy Planting🪴🫶🏾

Thank you! I have a few plants now but once I get a little more room I’ll definitely be getting a lot more. I like the idea of clear pots since it helps you keep an eye on root health, I use one for my orchid. Just curious if you use another pot on the outside since a lot of plants don’t like their roots exposed to sun (as far as I can tell) or do you only use the clear pots? I definitely like the idea of grouping too, it will be fun to build little ecosystems of different types of plants for different rooms! Thank you!!

Yes all of my plants are in nursery pots inside decorative pots

Hi! I totally get this — growing a larger collection is exciting but can feel overwhelming at first. The biggest thing that’s helped me is keeping things simple.

For upkeep, I have loose routines that keep me consistent without being rigid. I do Water Wednesdays where I check plants by room and water only what needs it, and Fertilizer Fridays during the growing season. My best tool is honestly just a chopstick — if it comes out clean and dry, it’s time to water.

A few things I wish I knew sooner:
• Light matters more than almost anything
• Overwatering causes more issues than underwatering
• Checking roots tells you a lot when something’s off
• Chunky, well-draining soil makes everything easier

I don’t aim for perfection — wiping leaves during watering days or giving plants an occasional shower keeps dust manageable. Grouping plants by light and watering needs is what really makes a larger collection feel doable. When a lot of plants need to be watered, I’ll put them in the bathtub and bottom water them.

Don’t rush the process. Collections grow naturally, and even experienced plant people lose plants sometimes — it’s all part of learning 💚

Thank you for this! I think I’m just very excited right now at the idea of growing to a super large collection. I do plan on doing research first and going at a slower pace, I just know where my brain is going to go when I get more space lol. This advice is very helpful! Thank you so much!!!

This is an older photo, I have since acquired an additional 25+ plants.

I have a lot of plants 120+ at this point and truthfully you will always encounter struggles given no plant is the same and they all require different conditions. Humidity, light, water, bugs, etc.
I typically water most of my plants in the shower. It’s a lot easier for some but for the large plants it’s just monitoring. I do have moisture meters throughout just to make sure the humidity is acceptable for all the plants. Neem oil and dawn dish soap with water in a spray bottle are my best friend at this point. It helps with bugs or any insect activity. I wish you nothing but the best in your venture. Post photos of your new babies.

Thank you! Your plants are beautiful, literal goals lol. I do find myself leaning more towards tropical plants so I have a pretty good grasp on their care (at least I think lol) but recently Ive also been interested in succulents so part of me feels a little out of my comfort zone with those. Ive had a lot of people talk about showering the plants so I may try to incorporate that into my routine. How do you make sure you don’t overwater plants in the shower, is it something you control more or do you put them in for a minute or two and they are good?

#### MTA324 svarede den 2026-01-02

Thank you!!!! I live 5 minutes away from a nursery that gets new shipments every Thursday so it’s a routine at this point lol 😂
So for the shower I water for a minute and nothing more. I’d rather underwater than overwater. The moisture meters help substantially because sometimes this App doesn’t always provide accurate information given the weather fluctuation by zone. I’m in zone 9 so it’s never really cold or hot. All of my succulents are outside and they are extremely easy to maintain. You can forget them for a month and they’ll still thrive. At least here in Southern California.

#### Plantlife svarede den 2026-01-02

Good to know! If it really isn’t that difficult I may give it a try with some of my more water loving plants to experiment a little. Also loving near a nursery would be a death sentence for me, I have like no self control when it comes to plants lol

#### Debbie svarede den 2026-01-02

I water them at kitchen sink and put pot in dish drainer for about 30 mins for water to drain out before putting them back. I do use clear pots and put most, not all inside a pretty container. I also use a sautering iron and burn holes on sides of all my clear pots for airflow. I have several ikea cabinets I’ve converted to greenhouses. I’ve installed computer fans and grow lights. The barrina T5 is my fav. Never seems to burn any leaves. I’m afraid of shower watering but I know a lot do it. I used to be a overwaterer so I have a little ptsd 🤷‍♀️. I order a lot of plants from BWH plant co. They have an app and great prices. Plants are amazing. I use chunky soil. Orchid bark, perlite, good soil. I also will throw in some worm castings and charcoal.
Let me know when you are ready to try tissue cultures. That’s when the fun really begins!! 🥰

One thing I typically don’t consider when wanting many plants, but should, is if I will have space for them when they grow larger. Look into how tall they’ll get and make sure you have enough space to accommodate their growth. It’s all cool to have a huge collection, until your collection grows to a size where every plant is fighting for a spot at the table. Even worse if most of the plants that you buy need to kiss the window, basically, in order to grow (nicely).

I live in an apartment with NW facing windows. I’m glad the windows go from wall to wall and take up half of the height. I can have some leniency when it comes to placement of some of my plants with having such big windows. But, yeah, it can be a pain trying to figure out where to place everything once your plants reach a certain height or need a bigger pot. I know grow lights are a thing, and I do have one in my bedroom, but my bedroom setup makes it hard to place the light in a decent spot. I had to get creative with the placement and hook it on my loft bed. It has four lights on goosenecks and is attached to a clip. This is currently the best option with the way my room is laid out and where the outlets are located.

Yea I definitely need to think of this more. I have a few plants that are HUGE but need to be right up against the window. I call them my light hoggers lol.

First off, I have about 60 tropicals and about 140 succulents. So my experience may be different.
Cleaning? That’s a rarity even for my tropicals. Idk why, but they don’t collect much dust or dirt. Tips? Don’t worry if a plant isn’t doing well. This is supposed to be for fun and enjoyment. If you don’t like a plant or not doing well, give it away or toss it.
Research plants and problems. Incorrect info is possible on social media and even with AI.
Routine? I rely on Planta heavily. Just be aware it is not always correct because that’s impossible for any app. But it’s the best I’ve found. Several times a week, I check plants for problems. I usually have 10 to 12 plant tasks a day from Planta. Yes it takes me a while to get them done. But I enjoy that time.
Products? I have many grow lights and my electric bill shows it. Fav is Sansi, second is Barrina. I use silica supplement, Super Thrive plant food, Bonide systemic, insecticidal soap, Systemica, Jacks Gritty Mix, worm castings.
Words? Go slow. Don’t start buying 30 plants a week. Things will go wrong, and then you will start regretting getting into plants. Also inspect every new plant. Quarantine for a couple weeks. People say don’t stress a new plant with immediate repotting. I take every new plant out of the pot when I get home. If it’s growing in a marsh, it gets repotted immediately. Or if the root ball is hard as a rock.

This is why you need to at least try succulents. I think they are amazing.

Succulents scare me a little lol. Now that I have Planta I’m a little bit less afraid to overwater. What succulents would you recommend or not recommend for the first few? Also thank you!!

You have lots of good advice here.

Cleaning: Get some microfiber gloves. I use those for any with large leaves. If you have ficus/ rubber trees, those seem to be the ones that get dusty the most for me. Some plants I have are more prone to having a few dead leaves than others. 1-2 x per month I go in and inspect removing any debris or unattractive leaves. Have a container with you to put the debris in.

Care: I do whatever Planta tells me to do each day. I save “progress checks” until Saturday mornings.

Plant choice: Know your space/light/time—-what thrives in your space, what tolerates your space, and what says heck no I’m out. Sometimes it is a little trial and error. Recognize when your set up isn’t right for some plants before you bring them home.

#### Plantlife svarede den 2026-01-02

Thank you for this, I definitely agree that my fiddle leaf fig collects the most dust out of all of them. I’m going to start a daily routine with my plants now so that as I get more it will be easier
