Hej! I’ve been thinking of using wine corks at the bottom of the pot instead of drain rocks. Has anyone ever tried this and if so, what were your experience? 🙂

I have learned that it’s best not to put anything in the bottom of the pot. I used to use rocks but I guess it’s not good for the plant

REALLY?? 😮I use regular rocks and drain rocks for my amaryllis. But i have read that it is better for the pot to have drainage.. is it because that even with rocks the plants root could grow and possibly lead to root rot - this is what I have read, which is why I was always so cautious.

The best drainage is always holes! 😄 But I can see using corks as a good way to add “filler” at the bottom if planting a large planter (usually outdoor planters). Corks are a good idea, since they’re natural, absorbent, and lightweight. Guess I’m gonna start drinking more wine… 🍷🥴🪴

I have used broken pieces of terracotta potting or pebbles on the bottom of pots many years ago to get better drainage by preventing the soil from clogging the drain holes. I found the best solution was to change to pots with more and larger holes and to add more holes. I also changed potting mix to one with better drainage. I did this by reducing the amount of peat moss type soil additives I use in my pots. I use more aggregates (lava pebbles, perlite, clay bits, course sand). I use more chunky bits (coconut husk, bark). My plants are healthier. I don’t have that swampy smelling standing water at the bottom of my pots.
