I got this snake plant about 1 year ago. There were two parts (like 2 separate plants) to it but one of them went mushy and disintegrated not long after I got it. The remaining plant survived though and has done well. A couple of months ago I got three little pups and they have grown massively. According to my schedule it should be repotted in March but I am wondering if I should do it early? The pot has gone misshaped and feels very dense and the pups are pushed right up against the edges. I have never kept a plant alive for a whole year and I have certainly never repotted anything so any advise is welcome - please explain like I am 5 years old 😂

It definitely looks like it is about to burst out the pot I would go ahead and give it a bigger pot and you can always go to repot you plant and see if it really needs to be repotted

Yes, a bit like me in my jeans after Christmas 😂

What a beauty. You have done well. I would wait until March. This plant likes close quarters, and when you do replant go up one size only. The pups will last until then. Great job on paying attention to it, making adjustments and keeping it alive.

Congratulations on your gorgeous snake plant! Some people say that it’s best to wait until spring to repot, but as long as you give the plant plenty of light, indoor plants are usually fine to repot during the winter months- just don’t expect any new growth right away. Personally, I’ll repot any time of year for my indoor plants and they do just fine. I really like Tanner the Planter and Plants with Krystal’s repotting videos on youtube; they’re very informative.

When repotting, you want to make sure that you’re using a planter with plenty of good drainage holes (especially for snake plants) and make sure the planter is only 1-2 inches bigger than the size of the root ball. I tend to go smaller with only 1 inch bigger since snake plants prefer dry soil and grow roots more slowly. I prefer a terracotta pot or a simple plastic pot for my snake plants. Use a VERY well draining soil mix; you can buy regular cactus soil and add extra perlite and orchid bark to it. I tend to do about 1/3 soil, 1/3 perlite, 1/3 bark. Using a well draining soil and a correctly sized pot will prevent overwatering and mimic the plants natural conditions a little better. Give it plenty of light to encourage it to bounce back from the repot and make sure you only water it when the soil is 100% dry.

Also make sure you update Planta with the new pot size, soil type, and light location so that it guesses the watering date more accurately, but still make sure the soil is completely dry before watering again. I like to stick a chopstick all the way down into the soil and make sure it comes out clean to check that it’s dry (kind of like checking on a cake you’re baking to make sure it’s done).

Thanks for sharing all of this wonderful information. My snake plant is struggling after repotting last year to a much bigger pot. Time to move it to a smaller one. ☝️
