Air plants do not need soil. Clearly yours is growing in soil so I would think it would have the normal repotting requirements. This one does not look overly crowded to me so I think it could wait a while. Do water it with distilled, filtered, or rain water, and mist it daily.

Water by soaking about every week or so with filtered water and mist often

That doesn't look like an air plant. I might be wrong though

Yeah you’re right I’m not sure either. I would take it out of the pot and look for roots, if it has roots it’s not an air plant as far as I know they don’t have roots

air plants can grow roots, they just function differently! rather than taking in nutrients, theyre more to secure the plant to the tree or whatever else its growing on. the leaves will absorb water from the air, which is my guess as to why theyre called air plants :)

i do agree thay it seems dark for an airplant, and seems to be lacking the 'fuzz' most airplants have

Gotcha! Thanks

I have a hunch that this is a bromeliad sp.

#### Valhalla respondió el 2025-01-29

My guess is you are right! Thanks!

I did consider that it was not a actual air plant but some other type of bromeliad. Air plants are bromeliads but just don't typically grow in soil.

All air plants are bromeliads, but not all bromeliads are air plants lol. Tillandsia are in the bromeliad family, different genus. And some can be planted in soil, though it's not often necessary. This looks like a Tillandsia pink or purple quill, and they are often planted. And yes, you will need to repot it to renew the soil, not necessarily for root growth like on a root heavy plant. Just to renew soil nutrients id do it 1x a year. And use an air plant fertilizer the rest of the year.

It did have a beautiful pink quill when I got it two years ago. Haven’t seen a quill since. At least now I know what it is!

If you haven't fertilized it, that may be why. There's a great brand called TillyBoost to help with blooming and pupping, specifically for tllisandia
