# Hello! I’m somewhat new to raising plants- I’ve had this one about a…

Hello! I’m somewhat new to raising plants- I’ve had this one about a year (pretty much my longest one) and there are now brown spots on the leave. I think I overreacted and made it worse. I think it’s a rubber plant, it’s quite small and just from the grocery store. Can the leaves recover from the brown spots? I think it’s maybe from overwatering and not enough sunlight- but I’m not sure if I should just cut the bad leaves off and see if new ones will grow in their place. Thanks in advance!

There’s a couple of options as to what’s causing this
1\. Did you get any water on the leaves then set it out into bright light, either by watering or misting this plant? If that’s the case, then the leaves still being wet and placed back into a spot with bright light can scorch the leaves. If that’s the case, you can cut the affected leaves off. Don’t mist this plant. It can handle just being in the normal room temperature and humidity of the average household.
2\. Edema, which isn’t a fungal infection, but will continue to affect new leaves if you cut the affected leaves off rn. If it’s edema, you have to wait until the edema has been treated before removing the affected leaves. Edema can be caused by a change in temperature or humidity. If this plant is placed near a drafty window, air vent, or frequently opening door, exposed to suddenly cold or hot temperatures, or isn’t in well-draining soil, then this might be edema. Move it somewhere where the temperature and humidity levels won’t change much.
3\. The last possibility is a fungal infection, in which case you’ll want to remove the affected leaves and spray with a fungicide.

No problem 😉 the last thing I wanted to say is that if it is edema, you might want to repot in a more well-draining soil mix and aerate the soil every once in a while with a wooden skewer. I use Espoma’s Organic Cactus and Succulent Mix for my marbled Peperomias, and any Peperomia in the obtusifolia class. Peperomias are epiphytic, which means they don’t naturally live in soil in their natural habitat, and in order to live in soil as a houseplant, they need something very well-draining to survive. If the soil it’s currently in is something of Miracle Grow brand, I would guess the culprit is edema from the soil or spot it’s in.
