# Hello - I just picked up 2 plants from my local Aldi’s an Umbrella…

_Posted by Dee-Dee on 2024-08-18_

Hello -
I just picked up 2 plants from my local Aldi’s an Umbrella Tree \& Cordyline. Both have leaves covered in a white powdery residue- the clerk says it’s from them being transported in a truck and they were probably sprayed with something to keep them from dying during transportation.

I cleaned off the residue with Neem Oil and have them away from my other plants. The leaves cleaned up and are now shiny.

What’s your opinion?
Should I be concerned and take them back?

Thank you for your input 💚🪴🤗

Hi! Some plants I’ve gotten from big box stores have had this residue too. It can be from misting with hard water as well. As long as it wiped off I’d say you have nothing to worry about ☺️

Thank you! I mean for less than $14 each I couldn’t walk away without them - lol
I figured it wasn’t a big issue since all the larger plants in the store had the same residue on the leaves. More so on the leaves under the plastic wrap on the ones I brought.
Again thank you 💚🪴🤗

I think I may have a slight obsession

Oh interesting. I wonder if the suppliers do have a product that they spray before shipping. I never considered that, but it would make sense. Alternately, these “stains” can also be cause by hose watering with hard water. So in that case it would just be minerals left after the water evaporated. Relatively harmless, but good to clean off so more light can get through to photosynthesize ☺️ Plus, they look better now hehe

Thank you I wiped down every leaf first with water than with a Neem oil spray. They’re looking quite happy now. I checked the leaves and soil for signs of pests, thankfully there are none I can see at least. It’s rainy here in PA so I have my glow lights on 🪴💚🤗
