# The first picture is a Swiss cheese I bought from Home Depot today…

_Publicado por Claire Jones el 2024-08-04_

The first picture is a Swiss cheese I bought from Home Depot today and it does have webbing at the bottom of the plant but I did some looking and found a spider so I’m assuming all of it is from him and not spider mites? I’ve never had them before so wanting to make sure.
The second picture is a ZZ plant I saved from Walmart clearance. There is white roots sticking out of the bottom but I do think it’s in beginning stages of root rot because I’m pretty sure I see some mushy dark roots hanging out as well. I’ll have to investigate better tomorrow. If it does and I treat it/cut off bad roots, any tips on keeping her healthy since she’ll be messed with while not acclimated? Also, should I just take off the damaged leaves?

While the webbing looks to be from a spider not mites, I would still do a deep pest treatment on both just in case. Then keep them in a quarantine area for a bit. I do a month since the lifecycle of most pests is around 20 days so if nothing shows up within that time I know it’s clear. Up to you on cutting off the brown leaves.

What is the best way to treat?

There are tons of options in insecticides, bonide jack, growers alley etc. I personally use about a 1-1 ratio of isopropyl alcohol, water, and a pump of dish soap. I spray till it’s soaked, then “scrub” the leaves with a two inch paint brush. Then I just let it air dry.

I’d cut off the affected leaves for sure, definitely check for root rot on the Zz plant. Those go downhill fast when given too much water. Make sure the tuberous bulbs of the roots aren’t squishy or brown/black. Completely change the soil and pots for both plants if you can!

To add to this, after repotting the ZZ, she shouldn’t be watered for a while. Remember that ZZ’s store water in their Rhizomes, allowing to go long periods without water, which is also why they’re so prone to overwatering. Speaking from experience, I almost killed my ZZ with root rot, and only saved it by repotting in dry soil and leaving her alone 😅

I agree except that I would remove any bad roots from the ZZ and then soak the remaining in a 50/50 mix of water and peroxide for about 15 minutes before repotting.
