# I’ve taken over care of these Christmas cacti, dad has had them for…

_Posted by Ladyrig on 2026-03-28_

I’ve taken over care of these Christmas cacti, dad has had them for about 6 years and the big one has never been repotted. It doesn’t smell like root rot but look at her 🥲what do I do?
The little one is actually flowering but still crispy. Help!
Thank you!

Definitely check for root rot. If that isn't it, it might actually be dehydrated (these are a bit weird because they're tropical and get a lot more water than desert succulents.) If it's rot or just as a backup plan, take a few cuttings from the healthy part and propagate. If it's rot, propping is the best way to save it; if not, you just get a bonus plant that you can replant with the rest of it later

Mine has some striations with age…If it’s not root rot and environment, I’d say saturate the soil if it not wet and make sure whatever window it’s in there isn’t a ton of heat reflecting onto the leaves. These plants are very resilient.
