# Can someone give me some guidance with my Diffenbachia? I got it last…

_Publicado por MiKayla el 2025-03-25_

Can someone give me some guidance with my Diffenbachia? I got it last summer at the farmers market and it’s slowly just looked sadder and sadder. I’ve tried different lighting (it’s in my big bay window in this picture to get good lighting, but otherwise is placed in my living room where it gets some sun but not direct). How do I bring her back to life? Do I need to repot and check for root rot? What does root rot look like in Diffenbachia? Any and all advice is appreciated!

I saw something that suggested it might be spider mites? Any idea on how to combat that?

Spider mites will be small white “things” you can see on your plant. You will also notice small webs and they will likely have spread to your other plants.
If you don’t see these signs, it’s probably not that.

Can you give more info on how often you water, when you last checked the roots, and the type of pot you use (most importantly that it has drainage)?

There was a small web starting a few weeks ago so I immediately moved the plant away from my other ones to prevent further infection and they seem to be doing okay!

In regards to watering…I water every week or so (until recently when I started using this app to help). Full transparency, im not sure the last time I checked the roots…that’s why I immediately thought to do so! It’s a plastic pot with drainage holes in the bottom.

Just guessing from my observations, perhaps not enough light. The pic, with the blinds down, I would classify as medium light. They like bright indirect light.

This is a south facing bay window that gets about 10-14 hours of bright/direct sunlight per day. To be fair, I do live in the Midwest, so some days it’s a little more gloomy. My fav plant store recommended removing it from the bright bay window light and instead placing it in a place where I can get bright light without it being direct. So it’s placed about 6 feet from the window in a spot where you could read a book for most of the day (that’s how the plant store said to compare light)

It was also previously under a grow light and the plant shop thought that might be too much

mine is in indirect light and its pretty dark and mine loves it. i think it might be that you overwatering i wait until the top is dry and i water biweekly. my dieffenbachia is around other plants and a humidifier so maybe humidity? also ehen you check the roots and if it is root rot, cut the bad roots and clean w hydrogen peroxide and water

Thank you! I’m going to replant her tonight when I get home. I’ll check her roots and maybe put her in a different material pot to help with the watering. The pot she’s in now only has a few small holes so maybe it’s holding too much moisture with too much excess dirt in the pot? Do you think 6 ft from a south facing window (10-14 hours of sunlight) will be appropriate? I live in an apartment so the big bay window in my living room is my main plant light source, but I do have two plant growth lights that I can use if needed too.

Hahaha honestly mine looks the same. I have named him Struggle Bus lol. I have literally tried everything. I've repotted it 2 different times (year apart as to not shock him) put him in light, away from it. Trimmed him down, checked his roots -healthy by the way lol- and he still looking like hes surviving and not thriving lol. I am pretty good with most of my plants but hes just sticking around for the slow death it seems lol to mock me.
