# Got this parlor palm for my fathers funeral and I need advice on how…

_Posted by Shannons brown thumb on 2024-05-23_

Got this parlor palm for my fathers funeral and I need advice on how to keep it alive… I repotted it first in a plastic pot and I had read that wasn’t good so I repotted it about a month ago in this terracotta pot and put rocks at the bottom to help with drainage just trying to prevent root rot but I still see some of the leaves and stems browning… it’s usually in the bathroom not in direct sunlight I just put it outside to get some rain water yesterday. I try to use the rain but if I have to water from tap I let the water sit for a day… anyone have any useful tips to help a sad girl keep this precious keepsake alive?
I had the same plant from my nephews funeral 15 years ago and killed it so I’m hoping to not be a repeat offender here with this one🤞

Does your bathroom have bright lighting? It needs pretty bright light. I would bet it’s not getting enough light if you have it in the bathroom.

And it could be in shock from getting re-potted. They sometimes can do that. But I would suggest putting it in a brighter area.

I agree! Bright, indirect light and humidity. Terracotta tends to keep moisture so always check the soil before watering.

I second the lighting, the one I care for at work was very sad until I put her in a west facing window. Now she’s pushing out new leaves like crazy!
Does your pot have a drainage hole? I found that the one at work didn’t lose the discolored tips until I repotted her into a pot with drainage.

The bathroom has a skylight so I assumed that would be enough light but I could be wrong… I will give it a good spot with better light and see if that helps that and some time from having to repot I figured it would shock it but I was willing to take the risk to reduce the chance of it getting the root rot from the plastic pot it was in cuz it was staying wet I couldn’t get it to dry out without putting it outside in the sun and I didn’t want to do that so yes to make a short story long the pot does have drainage and I put several rocks in the bottom to help it drain
