# I just got 5 new houseplants mailed to me and my boyfriend found a…

I just got 5 new houseplants mailed to me and my boyfriend found a flea for the first time ever. We don’t have any pets and the only new thing we’ve introduced is the plants. Can plants carry fleas and if so how do I kill them without killing my plants?

It’s possible for any type of pest to come into our homes from package, plants, other guest, or even just by getting in through windows and doors.  
Have you guys been around anyone with pets and if so is it possible one hitched a ride on you to your house?  
Not having any pets and seeing 1 flea, I don’t know if it’s a huge issue. I could be wrong but I feel like if you have a flea infestation, you’d see a lot more.

You can get those pest smoke bombs that you can set off. I’m not sure if they would affect your plants, so you might wanna look into that. If that’s the case I would take your plants out of your house if you do have to smoke bomb it.  
I would inspect your plants and look for signs of pests and then treat with something like neem oil depending on what you see and what’s appropriate for your specific issue.  
Hope it’s just a 1 x thing!

I would not do anything for 1 flea. Fleas can ride in on clothes and packages, as Jennifer commented. They live outside and are great jumpers.

Smoke bombs are overkill at this stage and only human lungs and your personal possessions will be coated. You can treat the yard with Sevin Dust if you live in a single family home. Again, I would do nothing unless I see many jumping fleas on my white shoes and clothing.
