# Any tips for fungal gnats? I’ve used water/hydrogen peroxide…

_Posted by HeatherNashville on 2025-06-19_

Any tips for fungal gnats? I’ve used water/hydrogen peroxide treatment, cinnamon, glue traps, repotted with fresh bagged soil and coir mix that looked clear (still treated before potting), etc. and the dang gnats are still crazytown.
I don’t overwater.
Any advice is helpful.

I do mosquito bits "tea".

I get them off Amazon. I soak about a tbsp of the granules in water for at least a half hour and then use it water all my plants. It is a bacteria that is harmless to pets and humans but kills the larvae. I would love if someone would chime in as to if the water should be hot when making the tea? I just use room temperature.

I also use it in addition with the yellow sticky traps for the adult gnats.

I do the same thing - relieved several plants with this. Just make sure you are letting your plants dry out in between waterings. If the soil stays damp at all, it will continue giving the gnats something to eat on.

And maybe let them dry out outside for a bit. I had too many seedlings indoors that weren’t ready to be planted. I was convinced the gnat problem would kill them all. I used it as an opportunity to start hardening them off, letting them dry out in the morning sun for an hour or two. After 2-3 days, the baby plants were gnat free. All waterings were with mosquito bits.

Room temp is best as this would be the condition if you were to use the bits/dunks for their intended purpose. I used the term “tea” since you let them “steep” (soak) in the water

Yes I also use the mosquito bits tea. You can also buy liquid form of the beneficial nematode if you don’t want to buy the dry bits variety.

Don’t follow the bags instructions. Make a tea instead. lol

I’ve placed the bits directly into the soil but it’s most effective made into a tea. The good bugs eat the fungus gnats babies that are in the soil eating all the yummy stuff in your potting soil.

If you bring in new plants, be proactive and use the bits to prevent re-infestation.

The only thing that finally kicked mine, was every watering i put a drop or two of Micro-biolift, which is a liquid version of mosquito bits made for fish ponds. It took about 2 weeks to see a decrease, and was down to just 1-2 after a month.

It seems soendy, but you literally use 2 drops in a gallonof water. So it lasts a long time!!.

I do bottom watering! The top inch of the soil should always be very dry for a while. I have about 30 plants (small and big) and it took me two months of bottom watering with lots of yellow stickies to get rid of all the gnats. After, I covered the soil with lava rocks (about an inch from the top) and got back to normal watering. No gnats so far, but this process takes a long time.

if your gnats are going crazy, I would also replace the top 1 inch soil of ALL my plants at least, AT THE SAME TIME, to get rid of as much eggs and worms as possible.
