# My bird’s of paradise is starting to get little brown flaky spots…

_Postat av Percecurses den 2024-02-21_

My bird’s of paradise is starting to get little brown flaky spots along the border of its leaves, it’s also showing little holes in it and lots of the leaves are splitting down the middle. I know it’s not under watered because I literally watered it 3 days ago, could it be overwatered? Is it getting too much sun? Is the fan in my room drying it out? The pot doesn’t have drainage holes because it’s huge and I keep it in my room… I don’t know what to do

Splitting and fraying leaves on the Bird of Paradise is totally normal and natural. It’s an evolutionary adaptation. I read that an indoor Bird of Paradise may exhibit less splitting if it is kept in an environment away from moving air (drafts from doors or windows, air conditioning units, heaters or fans.) I think the brown edging is pretty normal too, but could maybe be prevented with higher humidity. Not sure about the holes though.

Is that plant a direct sun light plant or indirect sun? Not an expert and I’m still learning a lot but just a thought….I see the top getting direct sunlight which is no good if it’s a indirect sunlight plant

Bird of paradise will take as much direct sun as you can give it.

A few concerning things here:
\- these babies need to drain or you’re at risk of many things including root rot. Especially since BOP’s love to stay somewhat moist. Consider switching to a pot with drainage holes.
\- Do you have rocks on the top of the soil? I wouldn’t recommend that for this plant due to the fact that they enjoy moisture.
In general, what I’ve learned from momming a BOP- they love moisture and super bright light. They will split a little from time to time. Consider a humidifier to increase humidity, or a plate with wet rocks near it. The spots don’t look overly concerning to me (but I have a high risk tolerance and tend to just let my plants ebb and flow with weird things 😆). As he grows, be sure to give him plant food regularly. 🙏🏼👍🏼🌿 Good luck!

Oh wow thank you everything I heard about bop was that it was meant to be indirect sunlight and very little water so thanks for the advice. So your pointers are definitely 1.) get some drainage 2.) take out the rocks 3.) plant food… also sone questions.. how much should I water her, because I heard they don’t need much water but now I’m hearing they liek moisture… also do you think it’s good there next to my window or is that too much or too little sun?

Watch a few white BOP care YouTube videos to learn more about care. Your watering routine really depends on your soil type. Feel it with your fingers and water when the top dry 2-3” (but that’s if it’s draining). Definitely keep him in your brightest spot for sure! They LOVE sun.
