So I’ve had this “dumb cane” plant for about 9 months now. When I first got it, it was thriving and didn’t want to stop growing. It grew so big that one day I decided to repot it since it was growing so big and healthy. Well this turned out to be my big healthy plants demise. Immediately after the repotting it shed half its leaves (15 leaves in total). You can see this now as the bottom half of the plant is bare now with dead stem marks all over it.

Months pass it’s still not doing well, leaves that used to shoot out and open in a single day or two are now taking a week or more to open. Lately it’s been doing ok the leaves that are there are mostly green, but there’s still leaves dying and the new ones are opening very slowly.

But now today I notice there’s now what appears to be mushrooms growing out of the soil!!!! Im not sure what to do and it kinda of grosses me out. Should I finally give up on this once super healthy plant? I feel that it will never look like it once did. You can see the drastic difference from when it was healthy in its old pot, to today.

It seems that your friend's plant used to look much healthier, with vibrant, full leaves. The contrast between the "before" and "after" suggests that the plant has been under stress recently, leading to the browning and wilting leaves you shared earlier.

Here are some suggestions to help return the plant to its former state:

1\. \*\*Evaluate Light Exposure\*\*: Ensure that the plant is still getting sufficient, indirect sunlight. It looks like the plant may have thrived in indirect light previously. If its location has changed, try moving it back to a similar spot.

2\. \*\*Check Watering Routine\*\*: Plants like this (potentially a Dieffenbachia or similar) do best with a consistent watering schedule. Ensure the soil is not waterlogged but also not too dry. Water thoroughly when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry.

3\. \*\*Humidity\*\*: If the plant has been moved to a drier environment, especially indoors, consider increasing humidity around it. Misting or placing the pot on a tray filled with water and pebbles can help.

4\. \*\*Nutrient Boost\*\*: After checking the soil, consider fertilizing the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every few weeks during the growing season to promote new growth and vitality.

5\. \*\*Trim Damaged Leaves\*\*: To encourage the plant to focus its energy on new growth, carefully prune off any leaves that are fully brown or significantly damaged.

By addressing these potential causes of stress, your friend should be able to nurse the plant back to its healthier appearance!
