# I’ve noticed recently that a lot of people are posting about…

I’ve noticed recently that a lot of people are posting about overwatered plants. Something that I’ve learned from my thorough research and experience is that most plants prefer to dry out between waterings. A great way to check if a plant needs to be watered is to insert a wooden skewer or chopstick, leave it in for a minute, and if it comes out dry with no dirt on it, it’s time to water. And remember that Planta’s schedule is never going to be completely accurate! ALWAYS check before watering your plant!

Here is a list of plants that like to dry out between waterings: Succulents, cacti, moth orchids, peperomia, tradescantia, monsteras, pothos, philodendrons, spider plants, syngoniums, dracaena, corn plants, money tree, ZZ plants, aglaonema (Chinese evergreen), cast iron plant, Chinese money plant, umbrella plant, bromeliads, hoya.

Plants that don’t like to dry out between waterings: nerve plants, begonias, polka dot plants, ferns, prayer plants, rubber plants, birds of paradise, carnivorous plants (which require a whole different care system than most plants), alocasias, peace lilies, dieffenbachia.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Awesome! Love all the info, one question, I’ve seen mixed opinions of growing lucky bamboo in soil, but mine seems to be happy in it, anybody have advice as to whether to keep it moist or let it dry out a bit between waterings?

I’ve never had lucky bamboo, but from what I’ve heard, it should be kept pretty moist. I would water when the top inch or two of the soil is dry.

Very useful post, and I agree, use planta as a guide not absolute. I’ve had to overrule the watering schedule occasionally, and that seems to be the best compromise.

Oh my God. Sometimes I wonder if I’m ever going to figure it out! I have sure grown to appreciate my easy plants like the arrowheads and the nerve plants!!! some of the other ones are just so particular I don’t know what they want and the Planta AI will tell me it’s water too much and then underwater in one diagnosis. And I’m sure it looks the same and it’s hard to say. It’s very frustrating though.
