# Any thoughts on why this stem of my Umbrella Tree is turning black?…

Any thoughts on why this stem of my Umbrella Tree is turning black?  
It started kind of in the middle of the stem and has progressed mostly upwards and a bit downwards. Now it is extending to the stem of the one leaf set.

😬 check your roots! Sounds like it might be rot

It was indeed root rot. I removed the infected stem and I’m going to repot the other stem in fresh soil. Thoughts on if I should reduce pot size?

definitely smaller pot and maybe do a little peroxide treatment on whatever salvageable roots you have
