A squirrel dug up my ornamental sweet potato, Ipomoea! I have accepted this declaration of war!🤺 I’m not too mad. It gives me an excuse to buy another plant!😂

The local critters lost a lot of their food source both last year and this year. The 100°F heat wave of last summer and hurricane Beryl this year destroyed acorns, pine cones and palm seeds before they matured. Squirrels thrive on these and look for alternatives. Last year they dug out grub worms from lawns and gardens which is a good thing. Grubs leave destructive crop circles in the lawns. My sweet potato plant was going dormant preparing for next spring. It was easy target for a hungry squirrel.

Haha exactly, always a good reason to buy another plant. Awww poor squirrels, that sounds terrible how much their environment has changed. I’m glad it was able to find a snack, albeit it was your plant 😬 Helene ripped through our area over here pretty good in NC, and a little family of chipmunks claimed an old terracotta planter on my porch as their home during the torrential downpours. After the rain stopped, I set out a little pile of seeds and berries for them before I went to bed and it was gone by next morning lol.

I’m sorry you went through such a rough time. It’s shocking. People had a hard time. Animals were in worst shape. The chipmucks were blessed to find refuge on your property.

You don’t have to buy a new one! Sweet potato propagates easily. Just make a sharp cut at one of the nodes and put it in water, add a little propagation powder for extra insurance if you want

I’ve planted the ones from my house. It did well and produced two baby potatoes before the frost killed it.
