Please help! I got this whale fin sansevieria a couple weeks ago. I checked its roots when I got it and noticed a rotten spot. I cut it back, sprayed with hydrogen peroxide, doused in cinnamon and switched to a better draining soil. I left it alone (no watering) in hopes of it bouncing back. I checked it today and saw mold and the spot getting bigger 😭

I’ve cleaned up the spot and sprayed with diluted hydrogen peroxide again. Should I be treating it with something else? Should I cut it vertically and just bank on the new pup being successful? All help is appreciated!

Did you let the cut spot callous over for a few days before repotting it?

Nope. Would I just leave it out of the pot?

Yes, I haven’t had this particular cactus but this is what I do with all my succulent cuttings and what I’ve seen others do for cactus cuttings. You have to let it sort of scab over and dry out so bacteria doesn’t get inside. That’s what callousing over means. It’s like an open wound on a human. You will probably have to cut above your previous cut line to where it’s not soft, moldy, or brown. Check the inside part for brown as you go and make sure you cut above that. I’m sorry, I know this is frustrating.❤️

Leave it laying somewhere out of your pot for a few days until that whole area is very dry. Then put it back in and wait for roots again. Most succulents require some amount of moisture to put off roots. They won’t put on roots if there is no moisture. The way I rooted a cactus in the past was to wet just the top layer of dirt where that cut is once a week. You want to do an amount that will dry up in a few hours. Maybe just use a spray bottle or drip some water around the cut end. The plant needs to sense moisture to be willing to use its limited stored energy to grow roots. But this is all after you have put it back in dirt.

Thank you so much for your suggestions! I’ll cut it back a bit more and leave it out for a few days. I hope that takes care of the issue

Do you think this is calloused enough to go back in the pot?

Yeah, I think so, just to be sure, is it really dry and hard feeling? If you rub your finger across it, does that dry part want to rub off easily or does it feel hard like a scab? Cactuses seem to take longer than succulents to callous over sometimes.
