That looks like a watering issue. Excess

So water less? A lot of the ground under the soil is pure clay and I don’t know when the soil or around the roots needs water

Yes, less. Ohhhh copy. Clay holds on to water for an extended amount of time. So that maybe what's happening, you're watering when the top soil is dry, but under it may still be damp.

I purchased an inexpensive moisture meter that I use when I’m watering- it really takes the guesswork out of the equation! I also have a heavy duty one for trees.
