# My jade plant is losing leaves very quickly and prematurely! Attached…

My jade plant is losing leaves very quickly and prematurely! Attached are images of the plant originally, now, and two of said leaves. Why might this be and how should I save it?

Overwatering?

It looks to be in a pretty large pot for the size of the plant, so my first guess would be that it’s sitting in a lot of excess soil and taking longer than usual for the soil to dry out between waterings, leading to overwatering and possible root rot. The second possibility is that if you’re not allowing the soil to completely dry out between waterings, that the roots are starting to become distressed or rotting from the overwatering. In either way, I’d recommend checking the roots tor signs of distress or rot, and repotting it in a smaller pot that’s no more than 1-2 inches wider in diameter than the width of the jade’s root ball, and giving it a fresh cactus mix (I’d avoid Miracle Grow’s soil for this one. It isn’t well-draining enough and will just make the problem persist. I use Espoma’s Organic Cactus and Succulent Mix, but any cactus mix outside of Miracle Grow brand should do), then waiting at least 18-20 days before watering, letting the soil completely dry out between each watering. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much! How should I go about checking for signs of root rot?

You can attach a photo of the roots if you’re unsure of if they look alright, but typically, they should be fairly light in color and firm. If they’re dark, mushy, and fall apart at the touch, that’s rot. Remove some of the soil until you can see the roots to see if they’re alright 👍

The roots are dark but don’t seem to be very mushy.

The roots look alright 👍 jade roots tend to be a little on the darker brown side than other plants, so the firmness is key with their health. If you smell an almost citrus scent coming from the roots or base of the plant, though, I would soak the roots in a shallow bowl/cup with hydrogen peroxide for 20-30 minutes. If you don’t, then it probably just needs to dry out more between waterings and be downsized to a smaller pot. Opt for something that matches the width of the root ball when the soil is removed rather than the size of the plant as a whole. Jades love getting rootbound between repottings and being snug in their pots, and it helps them focus on new foliage rather than new roots.

Thank you so much for the advice! I’ll definitely look into repotting and check for the scent. Much appreciated.

I tend to overwater and that’s what happened. Now I just keep an eye on them and check when I watered last. I typically water once a month if that. They stay under my grow lights and do great
