# Why does my dieffenbachia hate me😭 I got this plant a month ago and…

Why does my dieffenbachia hate me😭 I got this plant a month ago and he looked great, he then started dropping the bottom leaves and shooting up higher and now his final leaf is dying too! I think it’s lack of light so I bought a grow light…any other tips with these?

What do the roots look like and does your pot have drainage?

Yes it has drainage! I just repotted it today into a larger pot (shown here), before it was in a nursery pot with drainage. Roots looked okay? A bit overgrown

Hmm, weird. As long as the roots look good and it's in a properly sized pot (no more than 1-2" bigger than the root ball) I wouldn't be too concerned tbh. Make sure it's drying between waterings and it gets enough light and it should come around. Dieffenbachia are pretty hard to kill completely.

Example: I chopped this girl (senguine but not camille) down to the root ball in May 2024 and this is all growth since then. The root ball went from a 10" pot to 16" in about a year 🥴

Mine misbehaved until I put it outside on my screen porch. Part sun. Central Florida zone 10a.

Good to know, thank you! Unfortunately I’m in an apartment without outdoor space but I could try putting it closer to the window!

Maybe just a little shock from environment change and then transplant. Does the soil have good drainage? I just heard how forgiving these are on a live plant show. Hang in there🪴
