# My Triostar Stromanthe, Astraea, has had better days... but she’s…

_Postat av Court K den 2024-08-16_

My Triostar Stromanthe, Astraea, has had better days... but she’s pretty rough around the edges right now. Since I moved in June, I’ve been struggling to find the best set up with adequate lighting and humidity conditions for my tropical plant gang. I have all my plants in my south-facing window but the hot and super dry weather makes it impossible to provide higher humidity in my room. Im going to get them a humidifier, so in the meantime I turned a clear storage bin into a makeshift greenhouse and mist them several times a day but my temporary fix still doesn’t make Astraea any happier.
I know Triostar is finicky and always been more high maintenance compared to my other tropical plants, but she’s looking extra crusty and dusty and sad now. How can I bring her back? She don’t wanna be saved 😩🥲

Any tips/advice on how to revive this dramatic diva are greatly appreciated! ❤️

Have you tried maybe adding some grow lights for them?

I’d check the roots and add more aeration to the soil with chunky perlite or orchid bark or both. Also add some silica it really helps the leaf structure of variegated plants. I use diatomaceous earth and sprinkle it onto the soil to prevent pests but also when it’s watered in it adds silica. Or there are silica fertilizers. From the looks of it it’s just not getting/storing nutrients. The roots could be the problem

The triostars are also notoriously picky about the salt content of water. Mine was browning really bad and I was reading up and it said that salty water can cause it too so I starting using only rainwater for regular watering and I use a low sodium fertilizer with rain or filtered water when I give it to her. She’s also in a coco coir and peat mix and under a grow light and is doing miles better.

I use stress coat water conditioner to remove/dilute the minerals in tap water that cause leaf crisping in dramatic plants. You could also just use bottled or distilled water but I find it easier and more cost efficient to use the stress coat. Mine is also in a more chunky mix with bark, perlite and a little leca to help aerate and I haven’t had any problems so far. I’ve had her since January, hope this helps

Something that has helped me is putting a tray with pebbles under the plant, as this increases humidity. In high sun days, I also mist her (which I know is controversial) but she seems to like it. I use tap water that I leave overnight (before giving it to her)
