I read that you have to mist them. I just got one though.

I should say I read to mist it once in a while only.

I water it about every week and put it in direct sunlight

I mist mine then shake off the excess water the water sits in the groves of the plant at the bottom and causes rot which is what it looks like in your case. I only water mine 1 a month
