My avocado tree leaves are turning brown. Any idea what is causing this?

I have 2 other avocado plants that are on similar watering schedule and have same light distance that don’t have this issue.

Avocado trees do better outside, could be not getting enough light and it’s stressed.

The browning of the leaves on your friend’s avocado plant can be caused by a few different factors. Given that the other two plants are healthy, here are some possible reasons and suggestions:

1\. Overwatering or Underwatering: Even if the plants are on the same watering schedule, one pot could be draining differently. Avocado plants are sensitive to water conditions—ensure that the soil is well-draining and that the plant is not sitting in water, as this can lead to root rot and brown leaves. On the other hand, if the soil is too dry between waterings, the leaves may also brown.
2\. Salt Build-Up or Mineral Imbalance: If there is a salt build-up in the soil or the plant is receiving too much fertilizer, this can cause browning. Try flushing the soil with water (allowing water to drain freely) to remove any salt build-up.
3\. Temperature or Light Stress: Avocado plants prefer consistent conditions. If this plant is exposed to different drafts, temperature changes, or varying light intensity compared to the others, it could be causing stress.
4\. Nutrient Deficiency: Browning leaves can also be a sign of nutrient deficiency, such as nitrogen, potassium, or magnesium. Using a balanced, diluted fertilizer could help, but be cautious not to over-fertilize.

Since the issue seems to affect only one of your friend’s avocado plants, it may be helpful to inspect this plant closely for differences in drainage, root condition, and exposure to environmental changes compared to the other plants.

Your friend should prune the affected leaves to help the avocado plant recover and prevent further stress. Here’s how she can do it:

1\. Sterilize Pruning Shears: Use clean, sharp scissors or pruning shears to avoid introducing any bacteria or fungus to the plant. Rubbing alcohol or a bleach solution (1 part bleach to 9 parts water) can be used to sterilize the tools.
2\. Cut Away Damaged Parts: Trim off the browned parts of the leaves. If the browning is extensive, cut the whole leaf off where it connects to the stem. If only part of the leaf is brown, trim just the damaged portion, leaving as much healthy tissue as possible.
3\. Dispose of the Affected Leaves: To prevent any potential spread of disease or pests, dispose of the affected leaves in the trash and not in a compost pile.
4\. Monitor the Plant: Keep an eye on the plant after pruning. Adjust watering, check for signs of pests, and make sure the plant is getting proper light and nutrients to encourage healthy regrowth.

Removing the affected leaves will help the plant focus its energy on new, healthy growth.

Hi Aisha, I never figured out exactly what was causing it but for my plants it was always on the bottom leaves so I felt like it was less of a concern. I learned that the newer leaves at the top of the tree are the best indication of how healthy the plant is. I left the brown leaves on until they fell off on their own.
