# I need help with my spider plant! She was a house warming gift I got…

_Geplaatst door Jorden op 2025-01-19_

I need help with my spider plant! She was a house warming gift I got back in August and has been going down hill lately. Her tips are turning yellow, brown, and crispy. She was just recently repotted as I was concerned she may have some rotting but humidity/underwatering seemed to be the original issue. I have been increasing watering which seemed to help but now, I am noticing she has discoloration towards the base of her stems/leaves and any new growth all the tips are dying before they really develop. Is there anything I might be missing? Does she maybe need downgraded? She's in the pot she was gifted in and only recently put back into a clear nursery pot. She's in a N facing sliding glass door with grow lights for 12 hours a day. She is misted once or twice a week and watered by watering can once a week or bottom watered every 2 weeks. She is treated once every week to two weeks with homemade plant insects spray(water, neem oil, caster oil, peppermint oil, alcohol) I have included the pictures of what she looked like when I got her, where's she's set up, an updated photo of her, and the concerning spots.

Do you use tap water? I really struggled with my spider plant until I changed to distilled or rain water. Can’t say for certain that’s what it is but it may help! Setting tap water out for 24 hours can be a good sub for distilled or rain!

I use tap but am on a well. I do set the water out for a days and occasionally will use distilled

I am on a well also but I use only rainwater or in a pinch water from the dehumidifier. The salts and minerals in my water are not at all enjoyed long term by my plants…lol. The spider plants and marantas (prayer plant) were especially affected. Thin leafed orchids and calatheas.
My water is great for me but natural fluoride and other mineral salts not so much where my plants were concerned.
Another thing to check with well water is your pH levels. 6.5-7.5 is what I was told is good. This allows for the plant to use the fertilizer nutrients the best. I wish my grade 7 Science teacher could hear me now 😂 Best of luck👍🏼

It does seem like a large pot but hard to tell. Spider plants like to have snug roots. This produces more flowers and babies.

It looks like root rot or fungal since it’s rotting from the core. Both issues can start from excess water in the roots. The roots do best when the soil completely dries out in between watering. I recommend checking the roots, remove and treat rot, treat with a fungicide, replace the soil and let the soil dry between watering. Also, check for pests to verify no larvae eating the roots.

The pot looks too big for so few plants as others suggested. Excess soil holds too much water around the roots that the plant can’t use causing rot. I recommend reducing the pot size to one that’s 1 - 2 inches wider than the root ball. 🍀🪴

I believe I've read the dehumidifier water is fine for plants as long as it's not something you're going to eat. Apparently the dehumider cut fire can remove moles and contaminants from the air which end up in the water. Otherwise it's like rain water I guess.
