My Flaming Katy seems to be suffering at the roots. I’ve been finding these tiny flies in the soil and now branches are breaking off where the stem meets the soil because it’s so brittle. Any idea why and how I can save it?

Too much water. Let it dry out all the way before watering- they are like a succulent.

These are fungus gnats. Next time the top layer of soil dries sprinkle diatomaceous earth and then the watering after that use mosquito bit tea.

You’re probably going to need to do all plants since they often make a home in any plants in the same room.

Fungus gnats. My tattoo artist is a plant man as well and swears by 50/50 peroxide and water next time it fully dries out.

i love my kalanchoe! one of my favorites and very hardy in my experience. I like to make sure I break up the top soil occasionally to avoid it getting too compacted, but be careful of the roots. sometimes it’s more light, maybe try an insecticide but the plant should be patient while you figure it out :)

I water mine maybe once every couple weeks because it’s inside at the moment and doesn’t seem to want any more than that. it’s almost over 4 years old now :)))

You have to check the soil for moisture before watering to avoid root rot. Continuously wet soil provides a home for larvae from fungus gnats, mealybugs and other pests. Mixing Mosquito Bits in the water each time you water kills off the larvae in the soil which stops the life cycle.
