# Scindapsus/semihydro experts - pls help! So I decided to do a big…

Scindapsus/semihydro experts - pls help! So I decided to do a big chop on my scindapsus bc it just wasn’t growing/looking the way I’d like (rly small growth, leaf curling mainly at the top, some yellowing)- so my plan was to put the rooted part of the plant in semihydro (pon) \& I cut a majority of the vines to propagate bc I just haven’t had luck w/ soil when it comes to these guys.
However, upon further inspection of the root system I’m not sure if the rooted part of the plant is worth saving (also considering a lot of the roots just broke right off and look to be almost a light yellow color \& not white). So 1. Is it worth trying to repot? 2. Does anyone actually know what’s wrong w/ the root system…does this look like overwatering/underwatering…both?!😅 not sure if it’s rot, bc the roots weren’t mushy, they actually mostly look super dry - despite a good watering schedule. I just don’t know what I’m doing wrong w/ this guy and I rly wanna master it!

I’d keep it just in case, just go through all the roots and remove anything soft or mushy! I don’t have much experience with semi but keep quite a few plants in full hydro. They are going to go through an adjustment period in the substrate change. They look rough for a bit until they acclimate. If you’re gonna do pon I’d put them straight in pon and just give them time (the rooted part of the plant at least).

The cuttings in water is totally fine. I like to do mine a bit shorter just to get as many potential nodes to root. Just a personal preference though

Ahh thank you! Yeah I’ll try to save it - this is my first time starting to experiment w/ pon so I rly just wanna experiment \& see what happens - heard it’s best to try props first tho) I was honestly just going to do a glass vase and create a reservoir @ the bottom - if you were me - would you let the roots touch the reservoir, not let them touch at all, or maybe half submerge them?

And yeah good idea, I might cut more off the vines for more roots - but I did allow 2-3 nodes of vines to be in the water since I’m going for more of the long vine aesthetic as quick as possible, not necessarily a fuller plant look if that makes sense 😆

Totally understandable! I love a long vine 😂 Tbh I’m not knowledgeable enough with pon and the reservoir situation to give you any advice… I think most people try not to have the roots in the reservoir? Some people don’t even use a reservoir I don’t think…

I almost wonder if the soil was becoming hydrophobic, the roots look pretty dehydrated.

Yeah…it’s possible- the more I think about this Plant‘s journey (lol)…I actually think I was watering too much (just bought it from a big box store and the soil was more compact so it was retaining too much water). But a few months ago I repotted in my chunkier homemade mix and then I think I started under watering @ that point so the roots probably didn’t love the transition 😅. It’s not that it was ever doing awful- i just know it wasn’t doing great either \& I want to get it to the point where it’s thriving haha 😆

I’m sure it’ll happen! It’s all so much trial and error, love it, but so frustrating 😂 I almost killed my manjula about three times from overwater
