# I live in North Louisiana and this has been in my raised beds almost…

_Postat av N LA Lady den 2025-05-07_

I live in North Louisiana and this has been in my raised beds almost every morning when the soil is wet. It is tiny little bugs. Not sure what they are or how to get rid of them. My heirloom beans next to them also look terrible. Any idea what they might be? I have used diatomaceous earth several times but that doesn’t do anything.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Update - Google AI says springtails or soil mites that help decompose organic matter. Not harmful to plants just means the soil is not optimal. Who knew 🤔

Consider taking more drastic measures. Maybe get lacewings or ladybugs. Use Neem oil.

It’s fungus. It’s typically not harmful. It indicates the soil has nutrient rich organic matter and enough moisture to sustain the growth of the fungal spores. Let the soil dry down more between watering. A commercial fungicide will kill the fungus. It might not help the plants look healthier. The plants look over watered. Ensure the planter has good drainage. Add perlite or other aggregates to increase drainage. 🪴🍀

These are moving. Does fungus move? I wish I could send a video

If it’s moving (jiggling) then they are insects, as Liên commented on above, and not likely spores. I can’t see heads/legs/wings in the photos. Treat as Liên suggested. You may have to change out the soil if they become overwhelming.

Note that diatomaceous earth (DE) can become saturated with water and block the evaporation of water from the soil. This only adds to the slow drying overwatering conditions that lead to root rot. DE only suffocates some of the spores. It can’t choke out all. Fungal spores can remain since they are numerous and fast spreading.

Also- you could also try beneficial nematodes to treat the soil.
