# What is the best plant-friendly way to get rid of gnats? I have a lot…

_Geplaatst door Lacy op 2025-06-25_

What is the best plant-friendly way to get rid of gnats? I have a lot of indoor plants and today noticed my monstera is infested with gnats. They’re all over the plant and flying around the house. Looking for some kind of spray I can spray my plants with to kill the gnats without harming my plants.

I tried everything with my clovers and nothing worked until repotting. If all else fails you can try that

I had luck with the yellow sticky traps and mosquito bits tea.

I’ve done everything that has helped in the past too but it’s time for a soil change. They’re reproducing too fast!

I’ve used peppermint essential oil, and water in a spray bottle. All bugs hate peppermint. It’s natural. I sprayed around the plant, not on it. Essential oils work great for a lot of plant issues.

Side note: I put peppermint oil in my other plants so they don’t hop over to them. Zevo fly, gnat, fruit fly spray has also been working great around the plants.

I was inundated with them as well and finally, I splurged and got death drops. I use it every time I water any of my plants and it finally has brought them under control. I also put sticky traps in the plants that had them the worst just to make sure it got any of the adults and all my sticky traps are finally clear.

I hired Leuca Ravenous and the Sundew Gang. They're doing a pretty good job for babies.

Mix 1 part hydrogen peroxide with 4 parts of water, top water the plant. Might have to do it a few times to kill them all

I’ve heard 3 parts water, 1 part hydrogen peroxide. Spray the soil. Can even water the soil but make sure the soil isn’t overly wet. That’s perfect for them to lay eggs. I’m trying to replicate a concoction I saw in a store of essential oils - thyme, cinnamon bark, and peppermint. Mostly water and some sort of carrier oil. Anyone else tried this?

Making mosquito bit tea is the best solution I’ve found. It’s easy to use by soaking the bits in water from a tea kettle, adding the bits when the water cools a bit, then adding the “tea” to a watering can or a couple empty water bottles to use as water for watering your plants. It’ll kill the larvae and eggs they hatch. Sticky straps are great for getting the adults, but it’ll take a few weeks for the bit tea to kill everything off. Some of my plants really perk up from it similarly to a fertilizer, especially my variegated jade plant. It’s safe for plants. Biggest thing about it is to be careful to keep any pets from eating it, is all. Repotting with fresh soil and removing as much of the old soil as possible, then adding the “tea” the next time you water, and adding sticky traps to be extra careful, then quarantine the recently repotted plants from the ones that still have gnats might be the most effective way to go. Hope this helps.
