i’ve heard that bottom watering your string of turtles and pearls is good for them. i have tried it once and it made me nervous because it was so heavy and so soaked. is this okay and normal? i just don’t know anything about bottom watering but want to try it if it will help my plants!

You gotta figure in the desert when these things get watered, they get absolutely saturated and almost flooded, so I would say that’s OK as long as they have a chance to dry out thoroughly in between watering.

I let mine sit in the water long enough for the roots to absorb but the top doesn’t soil get very wet. It’s good to keep the leaves dry.

Yes, when you water your plants (all of them) you wanna give them a good even soak so none of the soil remains dry, that could cause under watering issues if some of the roots don’t end up getting water. Once you’re done soaking the plant (whether top or bottom watering) you’ll want to let the excess water drain out so the plant is not sitting in water and can then dry out with time.

Overwatering issues come when you water again too frequently which can suffocate the roots as they don’t have access to the oxygen they need when the soil is wet. The prolonged moist environment also invites the kinds of bacteria that end up eating and rotting the roots.

Another good way to avoid this, along with making sure you let the soil dry enough between waterings, is having a good well-draining substrate that is appropriate for your plant. Most string of things like to be in a soil mix suitable for succulents (just please don’t buy miracle grow, it’s horrible).

Last way to prevent overwatering is making sure the pot size matches your root system. For most plants you’ll only want a pot size 1 inch larger than your roots. If the pot is too much larger than that, then when you water there will be more wet soil than your plant can handle. It won’t be able to absorb all the water and will possibly die trying (literally). Besides, it seems very common that plants like to be root-bound so that will help them out with that.

Hope this was helpful watering information!

I would actually argue against it for those two plants specifically since they’re crawlers whose roots are delicate and mainly stay towards the top of the pot. You need to make sure the top layer of soil is getting wet enough.
Your plants should be heavy and soaked if you’re watering them, no matter which method

IDK but I’ve heard not to get their leaves wet and that is difficult if you don’t bottom water.

But why? Why would you not want to get the leaves wet? It’s a plant. I doubt they stay dry in nature. I’ve have my string of turtles for years and it’s grown a foot or two long. I always top water

Peperomia plants generally prefer their leaves to stay dry to avoid potential issues like root rot or fungal diseases. Also, if the leaves are in the sun the water droplets can act light magnifying glasses and burn.

Guess I have just been lucky with mine

Get a squeeze bottle with a nozzle. Water around the outside rim of the pot.
