# My bird of paradise has these white spots that were previously just…

My bird of paradise has these white spots that were previously just on the lower trunk but are now all the way up the stems. Can anyone tell me exactly what this is and the most effective way to treat? Do I need to repot?

BOP’s are known to get scale or mealy bugs. There are different approaches to treatment from using alcohol to neem oil. Google both to figure out if this is your issue and to see which approach works best for you.

It's hard to tell from the photograph but it looks like the start of mealy bugs, as previously mentioned. Mealy bugs look fuzzy whereas scale typically is more smooth.

Repotting isn’t necessary — for my BOP I use systemic granules in the soil and insecticidal soap spray and a soft cloth to kill and remove the pests. Alcohol and a q-tip is the most precise way to kill mealy bugs, though it’s time consuming for my taste 😆
