Hi,

I’m wondering if i should pull/cut the “bad” looking leaves/stems on this Bird of Paradise plant?

I’ve got new leaves/stems growing around them, should i get rid of the rest?

Thanks

Personally I would cut the bad leaves and try to save the plant, I’m new to BOP so I’m not sure how this exact plant would tolerate a bunch of chopping at once, but if it was my plant I would chop and wait for the new leaves.

I trim mine off when they look like that.

The plant in the photos appears to be a \*\*banana plant\*\* (\*Musa\* species), which can be grown as an ornamental or a fruiting plant. It looks relatively healthy but shows some signs of stress, which could be due to a few key factors. Here are some steps your friend can take to help the plant thrive:

\### 1. \*\*Watering\*\*:
\- Banana plants require consistent moisture but dislike sitting in soggy soil. Make sure the plant is watered thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry but ensure the pot has excellent drainage.
\- During hot or dry weather, banana plants may need to be watered more frequently.

\### 2. \*\*Sunlight\*\*:
\- Banana plants prefer \*\*full sun\*\* but can tolerate partial shade. Ensure the plant receives at least 6-8 hours of sunlight daily. If the plant is indoors or in a shaded spot, consider moving it to an area with more direct sunlight.

\### 3. \*\*Soil\*\*:
\- Use \*\*well-draining, rich soil\*\* to support the plant's rapid growth. A loamy soil with organic matter is ideal.
\- If the soil has compacted or is not nutrient-rich, consider top-dressing with compost or a light fertilizer designed for tropical plants.

\### 4. \*\*Fertilizing\*\*:
\- Banana plants are heavy feeders. Use a \*\*balanced fertilizer\*\* (something with equal NPK like 10-10-10) or one higher in nitrogen to encourage leaf growth.
\- Fertilize every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring through summer).

\### 5. \*\*Pruning\*\*:
\- Remove any brown or damaged leaves to allow the plant to direct energy towards healthy growth.
\- Dead or dying leaves can be carefully trimmed near the base with clean shears.

\### 6. \*\*Humidity\*\*:
\- Banana plants thrive in humid environments. If your friend lives in a dry climate, misting the plant or using a humidity tray can help replicate its native tropical conditions.

\### 7. \*\*Repotting\*\*:
\- If the plant has outgrown its current container, it may benefit from repotting into a larger pot with fresh soil. Ensure the new pot has good drainage holes to prevent water retention.

\### 8. \*\*Pest Check\*\*:
\- Check for any signs of pests such as spider mites, mealybugs, or aphids, which can stress the plant. If pests are present, use neem oil or insecticidal soap to treat the plant.

With consistent care, including appropriate watering, sunlight, and feeding, this banana plant should recover well and begin to thrive.
