# My Dumb Cane or Chinese Evergreen (unsure which it is) started having…

_Publié par Paula le 2024-03-29_

My Dumb Cane or Chinese Evergreen (unsure which it is) started having these brown spots on the leaves. I cut away the worst ones but hoping someone can help me save the rest. Should I just cut away all the leaves that have brown spots?

This is a Chinese Evergreen. You can cut off the brown spots, because the leaf won’t photosynthesize there anymore. But it appears to be a result of over watering?

A diagnosis said it was brown spot. I hardly water this one. I really need to repot it. My husband got it a few years ago. I didn’t like it at first but now I do.

How much light might it need? It’s mostly in a shaded area right now but I’ll use a grow light about every other week. It’s in a spot that cannot have a grow light all the time. :(

I have a couple of my Chinese evergreens in the east window, one is right underneath the window and one is on the table about 3 feet away, so they get pretty heavy morning, sunlight and gentle light throughout the rest of the day. My other one is under a grow light receiving about 150 FC.

You will need to move it to a window with filtered sunlight or keep the the grow light on at least 8 to 10 hours a day.

It looks like overwatering, possibly root rot. Check the roots. It could be lack of sufficient light slowing down the photosynthesis process. This reduces the rate of water usage leaving excess water around the roots too long causing root rot. 🍀🪴
