Hi All,

I have flies infestation in my indoor plants, and I am not sure how can I kill all larvae in the soil. I tried anti fungus, other products but nothing.

Thanks

Does it kill all the larvae’s of these flies?

Yep every last one, also some people swear by mosquito bits so wouldn’t hurt to try that too

I’ve heard people suggest to me to soak the roots in hydrogen peroxide and repot the plant entirely. As for a natural deterrent, I’ve seen a few folks recommend sprinkling cinnamon on the top of the soil and spreading it to evenly coat the surface of the dirt. Hydrogen peroxide might sound scary, but it’s apparently naturally occurring in rainwater and helps not only clean the roots fairly naturally, but has been said to improve oxygen circulation for the plant and help with root rot and killing eggs/larvae in the soil. I just had to do it for a new plant, and I’d suggest soaking the plant in a mix of about 2 parts water, 1 part hydrogen peroxide and placing the plant with the soil in a container with the mixture for at least 30 min, THEN removing the plant from all the soil, gently reducing it just to just the roots, then after running the roots under hydrogen peroxide again, then water again, and repotting it in soil, then sprinkling some cinnamon on the top of the soil. I use sticky traps that you can attach to a stick you can plant on the outer rim of the soil to catch the fungus gnats, so you might wanna invest in a few if it’s a common problem for you. I’ve seen others try to lure them with a mixture of dish soap and apple cider vineagar in a bottle near the plants that’ll kill them too. I hope you mean fungus gnat larvae, and not fruit or house fly, cause you might need a stronger insecticide for an actual fly. Hope this helps!

You also might wanna make sure your soil isn’t staying wet for too long, and has enough drainage to quickly send the water from the top of the soil to the roots at the bottom, like mixing perlite into the soil when potting/repotting and having drainage holes in absolutely every pot. The other way to help prevent infestations from happening again would be bottom watering. If you haven’t tried it, there’s guides on the app here on it, and it’s very easy to find instructions on how to do so online if you can’t find it on the app. I bottom water mine, use sticky traps, and repot the plant completely if I see any pest in the soil, making sure I quarantine any new plants from my current ones before I can properly inspect it for root rot or any pests from where I got it from, then treat it with hydrogen peroxide and repot if there’s an issue, and place it where I keep my plants. Really hope any of the tips you’ve gotten on this post help, especially if you’re saying you’ve had problems with gnats in multiple plants.

Thanks for your reply, and any suggestions in which Hydrogen peroxide should I buy?

Lots of good comments, but for a heads up, I have used yellow sticky traps, at least the individual butterfly ones, and they will make you crazy. They stick to absolutely everything, your clothing, your skin, other plants tender leaves, you name it, they stick! So, steer away from the small yellow butterfly sticky traps!
In my limited opinion, the best option mentioned, which I use, is 3% hydrogen peroxide. I use 4 cups to a gallon of water, as recommended to me by another fellow Planta user. Yes, the extra oxygen is very good for your plants and, as far as I know, doesn’t have any negative side effects. Seems like such an easy fix for a very irritating and damaging problem. Good luck! 😊💚🪴

That’s true. I saw ones that were in a small strip form where you could stick it to the inside rim of the pot so that they get trapped right when they try to land or enter through the soil. If you don’t wanna try sticky traps you might wanna try the dish soap and apple cider vinegar trap. Just keep in mind you’ll likely have to keep washing it out and refilling it as I’ve seen they can get nasty with all the bugs they catch really quickly.

This is the brand I use. It contains 3% hydrogen peroxide. I’m sure other brands will work just as well as long as it has the same amount of hydrogen peroxide

The cheapest I could find was on Amazon! It’s “McKesson hydrogen peroxide, 3% topical solution, 1 gallon, one count, four packs, four total”. The cost was eight cents per ounce, which was by far the cheapest I saw. If you find a better deal, let me know. Best wishes!

Thanks, I bought it and mixed with water. I watered today and I hope to not see any gnat flies again.
