# Is watermelon peperomia more sensitive than other peperomia? My…

_Posted by happysoxdonkey on 2025-07-06_

Is watermelon peperomia more sensitive than other peperomia? My peperomia are doing great with the exception of Walter. He came with damaged leafs, but as new leafs are growing in they’re just not looking great. He seems healthy otherwise, because he’s not droopy or losing any leafs. I take care of him the same way I take care of my others - bottom watering when the top inch or two are dry. I also mist occasionally and run a humidifier a few times a week. He also gets the same amount of sunshine.

Do you have any suggestions. The new leafs aren’t coming in flat or eventually turning into flat leaves. Some of the damage on the large leaves is how he arrived, but I still haven’t seen him produce a really nice leaf yet.

You don’t need to mist peperomias. The thin leaves varieties don’t like getting their leaves wet, so bottom-watering them like other peperomias should help. Unless you live in a really dry environment, you probably don’t need the humidifier until the colder months, so I’d stop misting it and see if it improves. They are more finicky than obtusifolias and clusiifolias in the peperomia group, and don’t like being repotted or exposed to the cold. Other than that, as long as they’re in well-draining soil, given time to completely dry out between waterings, and the leaves are kept dry, it should treat you as well as your other peperomias. Hope this helps.

Yes it does help. I will stop the misting and humidifier and see if that helps! Thank you!

The brown spots can be from edema or the leaves getting wet. If it’s edema, avoid placing it anywhere with drafty windows, frequently opening doors, or air vents. If it arrived with the brown spots and hasn’t continued to spread on new leaves, it’s probably edema from where it was before you bought it. If the brown spots started recently, then consider where it’s currently placed. If the spots were only there before you bought it, then just try stopping the misting for a while and see if the peperomia improves.

I definitely think I shouldn’t mist him or my other plants. It doesn’t seem to be helpful for them. I’m going to try not misting any of them because I think a few have a few edema spots.

Yeah misting doesn’t really help increase humidity. It’s kinda a popular myth more than a helpful tip spread throughout the plant community. It’s the same with pebble trays. A humidifier is much more effective 👍

I think my major plant parent mistake is just not leaving them alone enough. I think I want to make sure they’re doing well so I overcompensate when they just need to be left alone!

I think something is missing because your plant should be denser. Best guess is not enough light, but as Adrian mentioned, you could be overwatering. Mine is not as leggy as has more foliage. Mine gets morning sun, and drys out between waterings. The soil is succulent type.

When I got it it wasn’t dense, and I’ve only had it a few weeks. New leaves are growing in so maybe it will be denser soon. It gets a lot of indirect light and I only water when dry. I think it might be the misting that is the problem. Thank you for the advice!

Sounds like it just needs some time then. And as others have said, misting is pretty much useless. I think it’s often recommended just to make people think they are doing something beneficial.

Yes I just realized that I like to do way too much as a plant parent and that is not helpful to my plant. I need to give them personal space lol.

Also noticed the variegation is not as pronounced. That could be another clue of not enough light.

They need to dry out completely and be in a cactus type or chunky soil substrate. They don’t like their leaves wet and need space and bright light to grow well.

It does get bright indirect light and is in a chunky soil. I only had it for about a month and it came that way with a few new leaves growing. I will definitely make sure to keep the leaves dry. Thank you!

#### happysoxdonkey replied on 2025-07-07

I was wrong! He is one of my first indoor plants and I used miracle gro! I just switched him to the chunky mix I have.

#### Adrian replied on 2025-07-07

Hopefully it’ll start to get bushier now that it’s in a better-draining soil mix, then. You might want to add some rooting powder to the roots during the repotting process to lower the chance of shock from the repot. 😊

### Mamarod commented on 2025-07-07

Bring it closer to light source or find a south or west facing window or give it a grow light for extra light. If you’re letting it dry out and it’s leggy it needs more light and make sure to feed once a month when it’s actively growing
