# Can’t keep bamboo alive! 💀 I got three little bamboo stalks in dirt…

_Posted by N Klepczarek on 2025-07-19_

Can’t keep bamboo alive! 💀 I got three little bamboo stalks in dirt at IKEA and one by one each stalk turned yellow and died within a day or two, withering away completely over a month or so. I transplanted them to a rock and water only pot, instead of soil. Then a few months would go by and the same death would happen to the next one. Now I’m down to my last one after almost a year and it’s turning yellow now too. I know its death is inevitable now. I also noticed that no matter what, the water always smells like rotten eggs. It never grew, except for one small leaf. I keep it in a low-light area a couple feet from a window and I refresh its water every week or every few weeks. Did I just buy a bad plant?

I would try buying one that’s already in water. That’s what I did and it’s such an easy low maintenance plant.

Okay! Thanks for the advice. How often do you refresh the water?

The Planta app will tell you … but when I see it start to get a little low I top it off. I keep mine in a glass vase with gravel so it’s easy to tell.
