# Having issues with my pink and white princess 💔 I noticed some…

Having issues with my pink and white princess 💔 I noticed some browning on the pink one first and then some soft spots on a new leaf and Planta said it was due to lack of sunlight. (They’re in a moss/coconut husk/soil mix and I wanter regularly, have a watering tray underneath them for humidity, as well as have a mini humidifier for them). I put them outside under a shaded tarp (I live in Arizona) for 30-45 minutes and now my leaves are so droopy and soft 💔💔 I initially suspected the humidifier was hitting the leaves directly and making them soft but Im not sure. I dont have a grow light for them but will get one soon. Ive only had these for about a month.

So sorry to hear about your philodendron 😔 I’d like to do my best to help if I can. Have you checked the roots for any signs of distress?

When you say you’ve got a watering tray underneath them as well as a humidifier, I’m wondering if the combination of the tray and humidifier might be contributing to your plant’s health. I understand if you live in Arizona that you’re likely using the humidifier to combat the dry heat, but I don’t think you need the extra watering tray underneath on top of a humidifier in the room. If the watering tray is staying wet and touching the bottom of the plant’s pot, possibly the roots as well, and you’re watering pretty often, that might be overwatering the plant instead of offering the extra humidity you’re looking for. Pebble trays don’t really work in terms of increasing the humidity for a plant, sadly, nor does misting. I think you’ll be just fine with just the humidifier.

As for watering, do you know about how many days you wait before watering it? Do you let it dry out between waterings at all?

If you can rule any of these out, that might help narrow down what could be causing your philodendron’s problems. In the least, I would give the roots a check for any signs of distress, shock, or rot. Hope this helps.

Hi Adrian!! I’ve been watering my plant every 10 days… I checked the roots like you suggested and compared to each other, my pink princess has a very small root system which I think could be contributing. It does have quite a bit of leaves for having few roots so I was a bit surprised. I do think having them in the moss/coconut medium was keeping them too wet, as they’re kind of in a corner of my room so they dont get too much sunlight. I also think I’ll only do the small humidifier for them instead of the additional pebble tray. I switched the medium to a more tropical houseplant style with perlite so Ill see how that goes. Im thinking of maybe cutting some lower leaves on my pink one so the roots can develop more. What do you think?

If the root system is small, two things you can do to help it recover faster is to put Bonide’s Rooting Hormone Powder on the roots to help it develop new roots faster to support the current leaves, and repot it into a smaller pot. I’d opt for something plastic with plenty of drainage holes or a terra cotta pot with at least one drainage hole, and something no more than 1-2 inches wider in diameter than the width of the plant’s current root ball. Keeping the plant more snug in its pot will lower the risk of overwatering and allow it to dry out faster. You can take some cuttings of the lower leaves if you’d like to, but I wanted to give those options if you don’t want to cut them. The rooting powder also helps with transplant shock and recovering plants from root rot, so it should help the plant perk up a little faster as well as grow new roots. I get mine at Ace Hardware, Home Depot/Lowe’s, or my local plant nurseries 😊

I use this and I think it can make a big difference. From Amazon.
