# Is anyone getting fungus gnats around their windows? I have them only…

_Gepostet von Tara am 2024-09-28_

Is anyone getting fungus gnats around their windows? I have them only around two of my windows. The plants in that room are not having much issues. I have been rotating fungus gnats drops and mosquito bits for months. I have sticky traps in every plant. I recently brought in a fern. There isn’t one fungus gnat in that sticky trap. The fern is on a separate level of the house that the windows with issues are on. I’m at a loss. I put sticky traps in the window ledges but they look gross and I want a permanent solution.

Yeah, sticky traps are so gross but the only thing that helped with gnats - and a few big flies. I’m using everything you mentioned, and I still get gnats.

I’ve had fungus gnats on the outside windowsills. They don’t make it inside because of the lizards, tree frogs, night geckos wasps and mud daubers that feed on the insects on the windowsill. I avoid using insecticides outside because of them. I will use it inside to block ants.

Ok so when i had them i would put some old fruit in a plastic cup, put plastic wrap on top of the cup and hold it with rubber band. Poke small holes with a toothpick in the plastic then set them where the gnats are. When theres enough in the cup i put another bit of plastic wrap on top of the cup then run out of the house and into the garage can it goes. It sounds like alot of work lol but it's really not and it works really well. Thats how the grocery stores do it. Keep doing that until there gone. Bottom water also just while you have them.

I finally gave up and started mixing insecticidal granules into the top of my soil then I topped it with some standard perlite and put on some sticky traps after making my soil chunkier. The granules helped kill any larva, the perlite kept any adults from being able to lay eggs in the soil as easily and the sticky traps helped catch any adults. That combined with mosquito drops in every watering combined with switching to bottom watering has all tremendously helped.

It really is. I also have a couple of those electric sticky traps from Amazon that I’ve put one near each of my plant areas. It has light that helps attract the bugs and it’s been successful as well. I tried Terro gnat traps and didn’t have much luck with them. If you’re noticing the gnats near drains you’ll want to treat your sink and shower/tub drains too because they can naturally attract the gnats. Also remember it is totally okay to repot all your plants into chunkier better draining soil if they can take the repot. Clean the roots well of all the old soil ( I dunk mine in water and swish them around to help with that part).

Thank you. I had to do a lot of reporting already which adds to my frustration with noticing all these on the upstairs window seals in the loft. It’s been a few days and nothing on the sticky trap for the fern I brought in. I’m back to treatment with every watering. So much work.

I’m honestly thinking of getting rid of my plants as fed up with fungus gnats. Tried everything. Steaming the soil, peroxide, sticky traps 🙈

I repotted my plant when I was at my wits end with those stupid fungus gnats. Changed the soil composition. I’m praying it worked. I haven’t seen any around the plant but my plug in traps are catching them in three rooms of my house.

That’s my next step

I had a self watering pot I had to get rid of. They were breeding in between the pots. It was so gross! I’m scared of having any self watering pots now.
